The moment you bring your dog home for the first day, you cannot expect him to be trained and well behaved. With the passage of time you will realize that there are some dog behavioral problems that you need to rectify in your new pet and very often, one such common problem that many dog owners face is dog nipping. If your new pet is a puppy it is quite harmless for it to nip however as it grows you need to ensure that the habited is nipped in the bud so that your dog does not be the cause of shame and embarrassment to you.

Dog nipping should not be encouraged and there are ways and means to teach your dog on how to stop nipping the moment you notice him doing so. The first thing that you can do when you are checking the dog nipping habit in your dog is stop playing with him. Every dog loves to play and the nipping habit is generally developed when they are playing. You should remember that the moment the dog nips you during the playing session you should stop playing so that the pet can connect this to his nipping. The moment he makes the connection he stops the dog nipping habit. You need time and patience for your dog to understand this and you should not expect overnight results.

Dog nipping is mostly done on fingers and when your dog starts nipping you must redirect his mouth to another object preferably a dog toy that will help it reduce this habit. There are many toys that are available in the market for the purpose of dog nipping and all you need to do is get hold of a good one and offer it to your pet the moment he nips. The moment he starts to chew on the toy you should praise him so that he understands that he is doing the right thing. The moment the dog comes to your hand take your hand away and give him the toy instead.

The moment your dog nips you let the dog understand that he has hurt you with his dog nipping. All dogs love their owner and they do not want to hurt them at any cost. For this you do not have to scold the dog and yell out loud. All you need to make a sound so that the dog understands that you have been hurt by his dog nipping.

The moment your dog nips at you give him a time out and make him sit or stand in a corner so that he understands that he has done something unacceptable. The moment he connects with that he will stop dog nipping.

You have to be very consistent in your efforts and at the same time ensure that your dog understands what you are trying to communicate to him. There is no point yelling at your pet and punishing him for no reason. Dog training requires patience and care for effective results!

When you buy a puppy for sale and introduce it to your home you will need to start housetraining the animal which will take time and patience. Here is some advice to ease the process and have your puppy housetrained as quickly as possible. Some pups will learn quickly while others need a little more time to adapt. They will get there eventually, so keep encouraging them and be patient.

When a puppy is looking to do its business it’s only concerned with going to the toilet as soon as possible and in a choice location, which will be away from food and his or her bed. For a little while you will find it on your bedroom floor and all around your house so it’s up to you to show the puppy a better spot.

The key is looking out for signs that the puppy needs the loo. These are holding its tail high, sniffing around a particular region or continually circling an area. Puppies will need to go to the loo frequently, the most likely times for them though are after they been eating or drinking, immediately after waking up (like us all!), and if they are exciting they have a tendency to go.

How to train a puppy

Spotting when the puppy is about to go is a good start. You should have a nearby spot in the garden where you can take the puppy to make it, its toilet area. Remember if you have chosen to buy one of the newly born puppies for sale then its warning system won’t be very good so the spot should be quick and easy to reach from where the puppy’s bed is located and food and play area.

Show the puppy encouragement

Make sure you always show the puppy where you want him or her to go and stay with the puppy and encourage them. Chose a command word so the puppy starts to understand what you are asking of them and ensure you praise the puppy when he or she gets it right!

Ensure you are happy that you need to train the new pet you found in the pup sale before buying as it will be a 10-15 year commitment. It takes time but your puppy for sale will soon feel part of the family and you can concentrate on the more fun activities.

The holidays can be a busy, chaotic time; but also a very special time when we give gifts to the special ones in our lives and receive gifts as well. Now, some of those gifts are just what we wanted, others may not be as special but are warmly received none the less.

As a pet owner it can be a pretty scary time, with all the forbidden chocolate candies laying around, or the small toys received in a child’s stocking that an be chewed on and possibly chocked on. And then there’s the lights that flash and blink so beautifully.

Ok you’ve got your list made out and are ready to begin the shopping adventure. But, did you remember your best friend? I’m not talking about your 2 legged one, but the other one, You know, that 4 legged little one who is always there for you with love that is absolutely unconditional.

When the rest of the family is busy opening gifts; Where will they be?

Maybe safely confined in their new kennel, if they got one? Or lying on their new bed, maybe off playing with a new toy or busy chomping on a new treat, if they received any of these.

Dogs, cats or other pets don’t know there’s a certain time to open gifts so theirs can be and should be given early and with thought.

That new kennel will keep them safe from all the human excitement and a new toy or special treat will keep them occupied

A new sweater or doggy coat will be great for them as they don their new collar and leash and quietly wait for their special walk with you. How about a new scratching post or play toy for kitty as well as a bright new collar for when they’re out and about.

Maybe you have to be more on the practical side and look into training aids, whether it is to help with housebreaking or some behavior training aids. These are those dual purpose gifts, kinda like a new toaster is to the family, used and enjoyed by all.

I’ve talked mostly about pets already in the family, now let’s talk about a new pet that will be given or received as a gift. I am a Chihuahua breeder and this is the first time I will have puppies available for Christmas.

What an awesome gift, a new little Chihuahua puppy or any puppy for that matter. Take some time and consider, puppies need a quiet time to adjust to a new family and new surroundings.

Don’t just thrust them into a group of excited humans (adults or children), you will end up with a terrorized frightened puppy and it may take days, weeks or even months to get them back on track.

Chihuahuas get a bad rap for not being good around children when in reality it’s normally children who are not good around Chihuahuas. Now don’t get me wrong children don’t intentially do things to frighten a puppy, that’s where parents intervine with explanations and supervision.

Much of this bad rap has to do with how the puppy was socialized from the beginning and when they were brought into new surroundings. Giving them a safe and secure introduction to the family is the key. If you’re giving or getting a new puppy at Christmas prepare ahead for their needs.

A new pet is not a Christmas gift, but rather a lifetime friend and family member.

I can pretty much guarantee you your pet will not judge you for what you got them nor will they ask; “Where’s mine?” They will be right there by your side regardless of the any one sided gift exchange.

Before you can train your dog to stop his destructive chewing habits, you must first identify the type of chewing that your pet is demonstrating. There are different reasons why puppies and dogs engage in this habit, as well as a variety of ways to fix the problem. Therefore, identifying the type of destructive chewing is an important step in eliminating the issue.

There are different motivational factors for chronic and destructive chewing. The most common types are:

1. Puppy chewers
2. Spiteful chewers
3. Jealousy chewers
4. Boredom chewers

Puppies chew mainly for two reasons: to explore their new world and to soothe their aching gums during the teething stage. Dogs between the ages of six to eighteen months have a different motivation to chew: boredom (although this motivator can also apply to puppies as well).

Most dogs who are going through their adolescent stage have high amounts of energy in their systems. This energy, when not utilized or given the proper channel, can result in problem behaviors like destructive chewing. Chewing out of boredom between puppyhood and adulthood usually occur because the newness and excitement of the pet’s presence in the home wears off. The family does not pay as much attention to them as they used to when he was still a puppy.

A different motivating factor that’s responsible for problem-chewing is jealousy. This usually occurs in adult dogs. It could be caused by having a new pet in the household, or because the family has turned their attention to something else, thereby, causing the dog to feel alienated.

For example, if you keep catching your dog chewing on your books, it’s very likely that he thinks that the books cause you to spend less time with him. The same reason can be stated for dogs who like chewing on their owners’ shoes. Our beloved pets felt that the shoes were responsible for alienating the owner’s attention. Each time you leave the house, the dog sees those shoes “going with you” and he will take his jealousy and frustration out on those shoes at any chance possible.

In this case, the best way to eliminate destructive chewing is as simple as spending more time with your dog. Spend ten or fifteen minutes with your pet before you start reading. Take him for a nice stroll, or maybe brush his coat before leaving the house. Most of the time, all it takes is giving your dog personal attention to get rid of these bad behaviors.
