Flea and Tick Control Treatments – Product Features to Consider Before Making a Purchase
All Flea and Tick Control products contrary to popular belief are not created equal. Knowing what to look for can save you not only time and money but protect your pets from getting the wrong treatment. Let’s take a look at some of these features.
Before we identify any of the particular items necessary to make an informed decision let it be said the most important first step is to read and understand what and who the product was formulated to treat. I can’t stress this enough.
The selection process starts by searching for products that are for a dog, cat or other animal you may be looking to treat. People think you can use any of the products interchangeably on any or all of the above animals. This couldn’t be further from the truth. If you choose not to heed this warning it could have serious and sometimes fatal consequences for your pet.
Next, I listen to my vet when he makes recommendations. I realize that they have distributors make it worthwhile to them for promoting certain products but I also realize they wouldn’t jeopardize their practice. Since they are also familiar with the history of your pet they can make good choices for all your pet needs.
Look at the doses of the medication. There are several things to consider. Make sure that it is for the right weight of the pet you are treating. Also when comparing prices of the product with another brand make sure the amount of doses in each carton is the same or you need to figure out a per dose cost.
What are you buying the product for? Is it for ridding your pet of fleas, ticks, eggs or larvae? You need to know or you may need to just buy a general treatment that would eradicate either one or both. Sometimes they can be used for other pests as well like mosquitoes. So read the label for sure.
The type of application method is next on the feature list to consider. Is the right method to use a topical treatment, oral med, a collar, shampoo, mist or spray or a variety of others that are available? Each one has pros and cons and certain limitations of use depending on health concerns for your pet, children that may live in the same house or the size and location of the area to be treated. Make sure you know what the particular product you buy is best used for.
One product feature that greatly impacts your selection is what as known as the efficacy of the product. Efficacy is defined as its ability to do what is stated and is it effective for the range of measures you wish to eliminate. Buying a product that kills adult ticks for example might be all you need. However it’s likely your pet may have other ticks on them in a different stage of their life cycle. So although it may kill the adults, a tick still in its pupae stage wouldn’t be affected.
Some pets are affected by different chemicals in different ways. Know what the ingredients are in the product you are using in case they have a reaction. If they do then you can takes steps to avoid them in the future. It doesn’t mean the product isn’t any good, just that your pet shouldn’t come in contact with it.
Having a waterproof treatment on your pet if they have a lot of access to swimming or they get frequent baths may be of importance to you. These products work well but aren’t cheap so you don’t want them to wash off at the first sign of a little water.
Finally, when you are deciding on a program of Flea and Tick Control you should consider how often you will need to apply the products. Make sure for example you get products that will provide both the necessary remedies for the existing problem and you don’t need to repeat it every day.
If you keep these things in mind, and set up a quick calendar to include the next application dates you can rest assured your pet will stay protected and love you all the more for it.
