Puppy Mills - Learn the Surprising Truth About Pet Shops

Pet stops are a very popular place to shop for young puppies and other animals of your choice. There is a pet store on almost every corner in every cit. And it is difficult to resist that cute and desperate looking puppy caged up waiting to be taken to your house. But before you make this decision you really should know a little bit of information about these pet stops and the origins of the puppies they sell.

Ever heard of a puppy mill?

Do you know where most of these puppies actually come from that you see being sold in pet shops? There are certain breeding centers that have high-volume puppy production which sells them to pet shops, which then is sold then sold to you, of course. They are called “puppy mills” and are probably the most repulsive form of dog breeding practices that I have ever witnessed in my entire life.

My Disclaimer: Let me be clear on one thing up for you: Not every pet stop gets their puppies from puppy mills, but enough research has been conducted to find that a large majority of shops in the USA do in fact use puppy mills as their resource for pets to sell to the public.

So, what exactly are puppy mills?

To put it in easier terms, a puppy mill is a farm that is found most often in the Midwestern part of the United States. These farms actually breed animals for money and they mostly breed dogs. That may not sound that cruel but imagine these puppies being bred in high volumes and mistreated in the same way that cattle or chickens are. Now I’m not saying that all farms that breed dogs are like this - I’m referring to the majority.

If that doesn’t give you a disturbing vision, then imagine cages stacked upon cages with these small adorable little puppies, all suffering and being ignored. Again, I’m not talking about all farms. Now picture rows and rows of these dog filled cages, all with very minimal human contact and the only care they are getting is enough food and water to survive. You can easily find photos by doing research on the Internet which would absolutely break your heart.

What is so horrible about buying a puppy that originated from a puppy mill?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with taking home one of these puppies, and it is definitely a positive choice to make. No, I’m not contradicting myself; I’m just shedding a little light on the subject of puppy mills. On the other hand, many of these dogs have what is called Early Stress Syndrome (ESS) and may grow up to be extremely nervous and frightened dogs which are very hard to instill confidence when training them. Of course there are exceptions to the rule with these puppies, however, before you spend your hard-earned money just make sure that you understand that there is to know about where your puppy came from when considering buying one from a pet stop.

If you notice your dog urinating excessively, this could be the first sign of a urinary tract infection (UTI). Cat Talk - The Meaning of Mew, Meow and Yeow

This is for all you cat owners out there! As cat owners, we all know that cats have a vocabulary all their own and they are good at getting their points across. How many of us have given in to the pleas of a hungry cat demanding to be fed? Or how many of us are greeted with a meow from our kitty pal when we get home? Have you noticed how different those calls are?

I have two cats of my own and they certainly do make sure that they get what they want. I have noticed that they use different calls for different reasons.

The Soft Little Mew
This is my favorite sound. It is just so cute! One of my cats uses this sound to ask a question very nicely. He will bring a toy over to me and set it down right next to me and sit and just give a little ‘mew’. It is the cutest thing! Who could resist such a nice and polite request? So I end up tossing the toy a few times.

The Loud MEOW
The loud MEOW when accompanied with a direct stare is a demand. Usually it is around mealtime when they are hungry and they want to be fed NOW!

The Meow-Purr
This sound is characteristic of Maine Coons and is a sound they make when they are feeling good. They are essentially saying, ‘Hey, I like you too.” It is a meow followed by a purr. It sounds like meowprr. One of my cats is a Maine Coon mix and when I first heard him, I thought something was wrong with his voice and then I thought he just has a raspy voice. But then I did some research and found that the sound is made by all Maine Coons.

The Yeow
Yeow means ‘Get off my property!’ Or if it is a shrieked Yeow it mean ‘OUCH!’ In both instances, the cat is under stress.

Cats have a vast vocabulary that extends far beyond these sounds. Once we understand what each sound means, we are in a better position to understand our cats and also to communicate back to them.

“Traditional pet trusts” are effective in all states. In a traditional pet trust, the pet owner creates an enforceable trust in favor of a human beneficiary, the pet’s designated caregiver and then requires the trustee to make distributions of the trust’s funds to the beneficiary to cover the pet’s expenses, provided the beneficiary is taking proper care of the pet.

Many pet owners may prefer to establish this type of pet trust. The traditional pet trust allows the pet owner to have tremendous control over their pet’s care. For example, you may designate the trustee who will manage your trust’s property and the beneficiary who will become your pet’s caregiver, and you may also specify the pet-related expenses the trustee will pay, the type of care your pet will receive, contingency provisions if the caregiver can no longer provide for your pet, and arrangements for your pet once the pet dies.

Traditionally, it has been difficult to legally enforce trusts in which an animal has been named beneficiary. However, in recent years, many states have enacted legislation specifically recognizing the validity and enforceability of pet trusts. Pet trusts set up in those states are called “statutory pet trusts.”

Currently, 37 states including the District of Columbia have enacted laws that let residents set up statutory pet trusts, which are typically less expensive than traditional pet trusts. A statutory pet trust is a basic plan and greatly simplifies the steps needed to create a pet trust. According to Greg Daugherty, executive editor of Consumer Reports, you can set up a statutory pet trust for as little as $100, in addition to the cost of your will.

Up, Up and Away - Tips For Flying With Your Pet

As a human, flying is sometimes one of the most nerve-wracking experiences, even when you know it is safe, efficient and generally very pleasant. If it is that worrisome for a human that knows what is going on, just imagine how stressful it is for your four-legged companion. Both dogs and cats can be transported by plane, as can many other types of pets, providing they are in the correct and approved crates or cages.

Preparing your pet for a safe airplane journey does require some advance preparation that can help minimize the stress that your pet experiences. The following strategies can work with either dogs or cats, plus they also work with other species of pets.

Food and Exercise

It is important to restrict both food and water for approximately 12 hours before a flight. This means that the pet should be fed normally and on schedule and then kept from food or water for approximately half a day. If you only feed once a day in the morning and if you are not flying out until the next afternoon you may wish to adjust the feeding schedule to the evening at least a week before the flight to avoid the pet going for over 24 hours without food or water. Withholding food and water for 12 hours will prevent messes in the carrier and will also prevent vomiting and possible choking concerns while the pet is in the air.

Exercise the pet really well before they are put in the crate or carrier to get on the flight. Most pets are used to moving around a lot during the day or night and being confined in the carrier will be a bit stressful itself. Cats can be enticed to chase a piece of string or play with a favorite toy before going in the crate and dogs can always go for a long walk, jog or play time before travel.

Make the crate positive

For person a crate or carrier seems confining and restrictive, but for a dog, cat or other pet it can be a safe, relaxing and comfortable place. If the pet already sleeps in the crate or carrier at home, your work is done as the pet sees this as his or her den. If the crate or carrier is new, start encouraging the pet to spend time in there by placing some tasty treats, toys and comfortable bedding in the crate and praising the pet for spending time in the crate.

Use puppy pads in the crate

Placing highly absorbent puppy pads, on the bottom of the crate will help keep any accidents away from the pet. Covering the puppy pads with a thick towel or blanket will help as well. If you are traveling with a cat, invest in one of the small, travel sized litter boxes that can be attached to the side of the crate that will provide a bathroom area as well as a dry, clean place to sleep.

Finally, try to stay as calm as possible yourself. Your pets are very attune to your emotional state and if you are nervous they are much more likely to pick up on your emotional state.

Small Dogs, Big Health Problems

Small dog breeds are quite popular today, with many dog owners opting for the toy breeds as a pet. Even small dogs get ill, but managing your pet’s health is key to their survival. Small dogs face greater obstacles than their larger breed brothers. One of the greatest obstacles faced by small dogs is injury. While no dog is immune from injury, smaller dogs tend to acquire more injuries than most, due to their size. Keeping your dog injury-free and maximize your pet’s health is solely up to you.

Smaller dogs tend to have the “small dog’ syndrome, in that, they tend to be more aggressive when facing another dog. If you have ever seen a small dog dart across a lawn at an innocently passing by Golden retriever, then you know what I’m talking about. Small dogs attempt to make up with aggressive behavior with what they lack in size. This can lead to serious dogfights and injury to your pooch.

Maintaining control over your dog will help you alleviate any serious injury from dog attacks. Remember that dogs are pack animals, so this means you must become their pack leader. If you have control over the animal, assert your own leadership within your family pack, and then your pooch’s bad behavior will cease. Without any further small dog syndrome fits, your pet’s health can be free of injury.

Small dogs are also prone to certain medical conditions that can adversely affect your pet’s health. Hypoglycemia is a common ailment with smaller dogs. This low blood sugar medical condition stems from the fact that smaller dogs have faster metabolisms then larger breeds so their blood sugar can drop dramatically. Smaller dogs are also quicker to react to bacterial and viral infections. Since they are so compact, the bacteria can spread quicker and causing a rapid infection.

No matter what size dog you get, your pet’s health is just as important as their happiness. Make sure to get their regular check ups, keep their vaccinations up to date, and get a regular dental check up. Most dog owners do not consider their pet’s health will be affected by poor dental hygiene; yet, plaque build up is one of the leading causes of dog illness. A veterinarian can assist you in this process. Some dogs with considerable plaque and tarter build up will need to be put under to make it more comfortable for them. You don’t like the dentist, why should they, right? But dog dental hygiene is a necessary part of their yearly regiment and should be included. There are also dog treats that you can give your pooch on a regular basis to help prevent plaque build up between cleanings. Or if you feel comfortable enough doing so, you can purchase a doggie dental kit at your local pet store and clean their teeth yourself! These few small tips can help your pet’s health tremendously, and keep all of your family members- two legged and four legged- happy and healthy for years to come.

Training Your Cat to Use a Cat Flap

If you do allow your cat to go outside, you know how frustrating it can be when your cat wants to go in and out and in and out throughout the day. To avoid having to get up all the time to open the door, you may just want to invest in a cat flap.

It is a good idea to buy a cat flap that allows you to lock it when you want your cat to remain inside. If you also have a problem with your cat bringing friends over, or even if unwanted guests like raccoons or opossums like to enjoy the inside of your house, you may even want to get a cat flap that is connected to a remote controlled collar.

Still, if you get a cat flap, you will need to teach your cat how to use it. For the most part, cats will not automatically learn how to use a cat flap, and often your cat will be fearful of it at first. To train your cat to use the cat flap, you may want to enlist the help of a friend or another member of the family. You will also need a treat that your cat just cannot resist.

1. Your friend needs to sit on one side of the door with the treat, while you sit on the other side with your cat.

2. Your partner should be visible through the cat flap, and he or she should be a person your cat trusts.

3. Have your partner call your cat’s name through the flap and show him or her the treat.

4. Your cat will probably edge forward to check out the treat, and he or she may even nudge flap. Often this will be enough to get your cat to go through the flap, but many cats will not go all the way through.

5. If your cat is still nervous, you may need to open the flap a little to show off the treat. You may have to start off by holding the flap wide open and letting your cat walk through it a few time, letting the door down a little more each time.

6. Make sure you offer your cat the treat and a ton of praise when he or she passes through the door successfully.

7. After your cat has gone back and forth a number of times, your cat will learn that the cat flap is nothing to be afraid of.
